Omar Yunes: Mexican Franchisee of Sushi Itto

In December of 2015, Omar Yunes won the Best Franchisee of the World award. His contributions to the Sushi Itto franchise outshined the competition. The award ceremony was held in Florence, Italy. Omar Yunes bought into the franchise when he was 21. He now owns 13 franchise stores in Mexico City, Puebla, and Veracruz.
While accepting the recognition, he talked about how honored and proud he was. That recognition, he felt, was too much credit. He explained that he’s just a part of what made his franchises successful. He felt the credit should go to the 400 employees that work at one of the 13 units. Because of their hard work, it afforded management the ability to innovate.
The event had representatives from over 30 countries, including Portugal, Hungary, Brazil, Italy, and Mexico. A top team of judges evaluated each franchisee’s contributions to their respected franchises and what effect their units had on the network, not the brand. The judges evaluate things like: the amount of influence it has over the network, its contributions to network knowledge, implementation of savings, employee motivation, invoice amount, and proposed model improvements.
Organizer of Best Franchisee of the World (BFW), Diego Elizarrarras, Omar Yunes won because of his importance to the franchise. Omar was a major change factor in the franchising-franchisee relationship. He also played a huge role in achieving better management of information. He also implemented new control boards that clearly measured each unit.
Diego Elizarrarras believes that people like Omar Yunes win these awards because they represent a strong sector in their country. Omar Yunes grew up in many of the places he has Sushi Itto units. He understands how to integrate his units into the local market and embrace the people.
